Our Story

How it all started...

Altapass Baptist Church was formed in 1925 by a small number of people in the community. These people met with Rev. Don Hall in a local school building to organize the church. The church was originally located on Humpback Mountain Road. In 1948, the Clinchfield Railroad donated the land on Altapass Highway where the church is presently located. In February of 1949, the church building was completed and services were held.

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.  Matthew 18:20

Expanding the vision...

The sanctuary was enlarged in 1992 to accomodate church growth. Grading for the Altapass Christian School was done in May 1995 and the building was completed and ready for school in August 1996. In 2003, on property above the church, the Lloyd & Iris Burleson Family Life Center was started.  The Prophet's Chambers were completed in time for the Annual Bible Conference in February 2006.

Since this time, the school has been closed and the building converted into an Administration Wing.  The FLC is used by a homeschool group as well as church functions.  January-March finds it full of Upward Basketball players with lots of cheering and laughter.

Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.  Psalms 29:2

Where we are...

Sunday, August 21, 2011, marked the last Sunday that Rev. Steve Sisk and Carol Sisk served as our Pastor and Pastor's wife. Preacher Steve and Carol served God faithfully for nearly 25 years here at Altapass Baptist Church.

Sunday, October 9, 2011, saw Altapass Baptist Church vote Dr. Marcus Benfield in as our new Pastor. We thank God for His hand on this man, his wife (Teresa) and family to allow them to become our new Pastor's family to lead us into the future. Dr. Benfield officially started on October 30, 2011.

Through the decades of change, the congregation's steadfast focus on The Lord has never wavered.  He has never failed us.  With His guidance, we will finish the race.
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19
